Introduction

Cacao plant was introduced in the Philippines sometime in 1670

The Philippines was the 1^st in Asia to plant cacao and prepare chocolate drinks from cocoa beans.

Commercial cacao farms in the Philippines was put up in the mid 1950's and cocoa beans production expanded into an industry in 1960's as processing facilities were put up by a group of Filipino investors and more cacao commercial farms were established in Mindanao.

In mid 1980 the industry started to take-off as more investments were poured on commercial farms and on grinding facilities

The implementation of the CARP in 1992 had resulted in the breakdown and redistribution of the commercial farms in Mindanao into small farm units.

Production

Area

Of the total area devoted to cacao in 1998, Mindanao accounted for 88.44% or 13,231 hectares, Luzon 6.83% or 1,021 hectares and Visayas 4.73% or 707 hectares.

Northern Mindanao has the largest area devoted to cocoa (55.62%) or 760 hectares followed by CARAGA (10.42%) or 1,558 hectares, ARMM (7.35%) or 1,099 hectares, Western Mindanao (5.66%) or 847 hectares and Northern Mindanao (5.08%) or 760 hectares.

Volume

Southern Mindanao is the largest producing region with 71.30% or 5,252 mt contribution in the total production. Other producing Regions are: Northern Mindanao (6.90%) or 508 mt, CARAGA (6.52%) or 480 mt, Western Mindanao (4.56%) or 336 mt with a cumulative total of 17.98%. or 1,324 mt the remaining 10.72% or 790 mt was shared by other regions.

o Davao Oriental : 5.83% or 1,913 mt

o Sarangani : 5.52% or 720 mt

o Davao City : 3.03% or 534 mt

Export

In 1998, the Philippines exported Cocoa Butter (fat oil) which accounted for 22.34% or 3,123 mt of the country's total export. Cocoa paste (wholly/partly defatted-cocoa cake), cocoa beans (whole/broken, raw roast) and cocoa paste (not defatted) were likewise exported with 18.65% or 20 mt, 18.48% or 1,407 mt , 17.49% or 1,363 mt shares in the market, respectively.

Malaysia absorbed the bulk of the cocoa beans while majority of the Philippine cocoa powder and not defatted cocoa paste were shopped to Korea. USA is the Philippines major market for cocoa butter while India is the sole market for Philippine cocoa paste/cocoa cake.

Import

For the year 1998, the Philippine imported more than 50% of its requirement for cocoa beans, the big portion of which was sourced from Indonesia. The 2^nd largest import of the Philippines is the cocoa powder (not containing added sugar/other sweetening matter) which accounted for 27.81% which was supplied by Singapore
