 Western Mindanao's population of 3 million comprises 4 percent of the country's population of 73 million as of 1998.  The region's average annual population growth rate is 2.42 percent.  As of 1998, the following are the estimated population of the region:

Socio-Economic Information

The region's economy expressed in terms of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) posted 4.9 percent growth in 1997 (P23,121 billion), a significant improvement over the 1996's 1.0 percent growth (P22,031 billion).

Western Mindanao's share in the growth of the country's total output remained at 2.58 percent for the period 1997.  Among the regions in Mindanao, Region 11 posted the biggest share at 6.56 while ARMM accounted the smallest share at 0.97 percent.

Agro-Climatic Information

The region's topography is relatively rugged.  Roughly 51% of its area are hilly, some having steep slopes and within the elevation range of 100 to more than 1,000 meters above sea level.  The region's climate is classified as type 3 and 4 meaning there is no pronounced dry and wet season or there is uniform rainfall distribution throughout the year.  The annual average rainfall distribution is 2,372 mm.  The region is outside the typhoon belt.
