In 1994, the ANGOC General Assembly (i.e.,
members) approved the vision for Asia and ANGOC’s Mission Statement.
VISION
“Vibrant Asian Rural Communities living in
harmony with nature as stewards of the Earth, whose members are able to
realize their full human potentials, collectively chart their path to
development, provide for their present and future needs, and equitably share
the fruits of their labors in community celebrations of Life.”
MISSION
To create a policy and social environment that
enables Asian Rural Poor Communities to exercise their rights to
participatory development, gain access to and control of their natural
resources, and engage in sustainable livelihoods while drawing from Asia’s
rich spiritual and cultural traditions by:
-
Consolidating, promoting and mainstreaming
alternative development experiences in Agrarian Reform, Sustainable
Agriculture and Rural Development (ARSARD)
-
Strengthening Asian Grassroots-Action
Networks
Guiding Principles
As a result of ANGOC’s five-year visioning
process from 1991-1996 of defining and promoting people-centered sustainable
development from the perspective of Asian rural communities, ANGOC resolves
to:
-
Build upon the diversity of our cultures
and spirituality whose roots lie at the core of our Asian identity and
values;
-
Restore the rights of communities over
their resources and livelihood;
-
Recognize the autonomy of communities to
design and realize their own development with gender equity and human
development;
-
Restore and enhance the freedom and
self-governance of grassroots communities and place them at the center
of development; and,
-
Enable people to achieve self-reliance and
self-sufficiency in their basic needs, live in a culture of peace and
harmony and organize themselves to deal with all forces that impeded
their development.
