'MAKATI INTENSIFIES DRUG DRIVE' Sept. 16, 2001 Page 14 Manila Bulletin The Makati City government, the police, barangays and non-government organizations launched yesterday an all-out war on illegal drugs to make the city the first drug-free urban center in the country. Mayor Jejomar C. Binay and Vice-Mayor Nestor Mercado, who is the head of the Makati Anti-Drug Abuse Council (MADAC), led the launching ceremony at the City Hall quadrangle where three effigies symbolizing the drug menace were burned before thousands of spectators. The launching rites were preceded by a mammoth rally participated in by public school teachers and students, barangay officials and residents, religious groups, the local police, and members of several non-government organizations. The signatories to the MOA were Mayor Binay, Vice-Mayor Mercado, the Liga ng mga Barangay, the City Council, the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, the city Police headed by Superintendent Jovito Gutierrez Jr., the Drug Enforcement Unit headed by Senior Inspector Cesar Garcia, local Education Department officials and NGO representatives. |
