33rd World Convention of Narcotics Anonymous

August 20-23, 2009 Barcelona, Spain

What is a sponsor? In the beginning when Bill W. And Dr. Bob started the original 12 step program of AA, there were no sponsors. Jack Alaxander, a newspaperman, wrote a series of articles on the fellowship of AA and it’s success. After those articles the influx of newcomer’s was so large that the idea of guides (sponsors) to the 12 steps was needed. These people may have had a month or two sober but it was all there was.

Today sponsors are a very important part of an person's recovery program. There are several ways to choose a sponsor. One way is to look for some one who has the type of sobriety you want. Another is to look for someone who is very knowledgeable in the program but will put you through your paces. Either way you need to have a sponsor.

Did you speak with your sponsor today? Obviously if you don’t have one the answer is no. If you left a message but did not speak with him/her the answer is no. If you speak with him/her even for only a minute the answer is yes. Just keeping in regular contact is what is important. The day will come when you need them in a big way and you should be very familiar with them at that point. It is suggested that you speak to your sponsor(s) at least 3x/week.
